Homemade Donuts Recipe

Ingredients

For the Donuts:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Oil for frying

For the Glaze (optional):

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 2 tablespoons milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg (if using). Whisk until well combined.

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.

2. Shape the Donuts

  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it gently for a few seconds until it becomes smooth.

  • Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.

  • Using a donut cutter or two round cutters (one larger for the outer circle and one smaller for the hole), cut out donut shapes.

3. Fry the Donuts

  • In a deep pot or frying pan, heat oil to 375°F (190°C). Use enough oil to submerge the donuts.

  • Carefully place the donuts into the hot oil, a few at a time, without overcrowding.

  • Fry the donuts for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.

  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts and drain them on paper towels.

4. Prepare the Glaze (Optional)

  • In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency with more milk or powdered sugar as needed.

5. Glaze the Donuts

  • While the donuts are still warm, dip them into the glaze, allowing any excess to drip off.

  • Alternatively, you can sprinkle them with granulated sugar or your favorite toppings.

6. Serve and Enjoy

  • Let the donuts cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them fresh!
