Ingredients
For the Donuts:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
1/2 cup milk
2 large eggs
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Oil for frying
For the Glaze (optional):
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg (if using). Whisk until well combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
2. Shape the Donuts
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it gently for a few seconds until it becomes smooth.
Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
Using a donut cutter or two round cutters (one larger for the outer circle and one smaller for the hole), cut out donut shapes.
3. Fry the Donuts
In a deep pot or frying pan, heat oil to 375°F (190°C). Use enough oil to submerge the donuts.
Carefully place the donuts into the hot oil, a few at a time, without overcrowding.
Fry the donuts for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.
Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts and drain them on paper towels.
4. Prepare the Glaze (Optional)
In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency with more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
5. Glaze the Donuts
While the donuts are still warm, dip them into the glaze, allowing any excess to drip off.
Alternatively, you can sprinkle them with granulated sugar or your favorite toppings.
6. Serve and Enjoy
Let the donuts cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them fresh!
