Baklava Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Baklava:

    • 1 package of phyllo dough (about 16 oz)

    • 2 cups of chopped nuts (walnuts, pistachios, or almonds)

    • 1 cup of unsalted butter (melted)

    • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (optional)

  • For the Syrup:

    • 1 cup of water

    • 1 cup of granulated sugar

    • 1/2 cup of honey

    • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

    • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice






Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Nut Mixture:

    • In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts and ground cinnamon (if using). Mix well and set aside.

  2. Prepare the Phyllo Dough:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

    • Carefully unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.

  3. Assemble the Baklava:

    • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with some melted butter.

    • Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush it lightly with melted butter. Repeat this step, layering about 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each layer with butter.

    • Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo.

    • Add 2 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, then add another layer of the nut mixture. Repeat this process until all the nuts are used, finishing with about 8 layers of phyllo on top.

    • Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.

  4. Bake:

    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.

  5. Prepare the Syrup:

    • While the baklava is baking, combine the water, sugar, honey, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.

  6. Pour the Syrup:

    • Once the baklava is baked, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot baklava. Allow it to soak in for several hours or overnight.

  7. Serve:

    • Once the baklava has cooled and soaked in the syrup, serve it at room temperature. Enjoy!
